I was sitting here looking at all the pictures from this past year and realized that I never wrote down the twins birth story.
I had a doctors appointment 2 days before the twins came, I went with my bags packed hoping they would send me to the hospital. No such luck! They told me to come back in a week. Thankfully the twins had other plans. At that point I just hit 36 weeks. Two nights later I could not sleep, I remember watching some tv and being so uncomfortable I started to walk laps. Surprise my water broke!! It was time! I woke Eric up and we called our sweet friend Joyce. I love that she had kept the phone waiting by her bed, she was ready for that call! She rushed over and stayed with the boys until my dad could get there.
As soon as they admitted me I asked for the epidural! I wasn't in much pain but because of how quick the Bratager babies like to come I knew I shouldn't wait. They had told me since I was having twins and I had to deliver in the OR it also was not an option, I had to have one. Our nurse wrote it down, after waiting for an hour or so we were transferred to my room. By then it was around 1:00 am. I was trying to rest some and my mom and sister were on their way. The contractions were coming on stronger and I had to ask again for the epidural. The nurse said he had ordered it and they would be up anytime with it. Next thing I remember they said I progressed so quickly they were rushing me into the OR. It was time! When we went into the OR my doctor was in there along with 2 nurses for me, the pediatrician on call and 2 nurses for each of the twins. They were all whispering to each other, my doctor looked very angry and was upset that my epidural was never brought up. They found out the nurse never placed the order. Ugh, not happy! It was time to deliver the twins and my window for the drugs was gone :( I had Joshua naturally but the issue with the twins was Matthew was breached :( The nurses kept saying they could not believe I was going to have to do this without drugs. I was starting to get really scared and upset too. I had to remind them I was not on drugs and could hear everything that they were saying. They all kept apologizing and told me it would be ok. The doctor looked at me and said there is nothing we could do about it, we had to deliver. A few pushes later and Abby was here! First thing I asked was if she was really a girl! I knew they said I was having one but I needed to be sure a girl actually came out. The room was laughing at that point. I listened to that sweet cry, it was such an amazing sound. At 5:41 we welcomed Abby Bratager into our lives. 6lbs 13oz.
Next it was time for my little man! The room became very tense again. The doctor warned me this was not going to be good but we had to get Matthew out and quickly, his heart rate was dropping. The doctor had to reach inside and attempt to flip Matthew around. Yep, that was fun :( After a few attempts and the heart rate getting worse she said she was going to have to pull him out by his legs. She grabbed one leg but the other was jack knifed inside of me. They wanted to do an emergency C-section but because of not having any drugs in me what so ever there was no time. She ended up yanking him out. When he came out he was all blue and we did not hear that sweet cry. I kept trying to push Eric over to check on him but he stood there beside me. He could not move. I could not see what was going on but Eric held my hand and told me they were working on him. After what seemed like forever they were able to get him to cry. I just cried along with him. My sweet boy made his dramatic entrance at 5:49. Welcome to the world Matthew Bratager! 6lbs 2oz.
Things had changed so much since we had our other kids. They cleaned up the twins, handed one to Eric and one to me and we were off to our regular room. Because of Matthew's hard delivery he had several issues. Thankfully we never had to go to the NICU but we did have to stay one extra night in the hospital. His legs were badly bruised because she had to pull him out so hard. He strained a muscle in his neck. He also had jaundice, all of my boys had this but they all were allowed to check out on time. They said because of all the bruising his was a little more severe.

I am so thankful that my mom and sister were there why all this was happening. When we went back to the room I started having some issues. I was bleeding a little more than they wanted. I don't remember much after delivering the twins. I do remember my sister running over to me while I was holding one of the twins and I started to pass out. My mom and sister took the twins and Eric went with me as I was rushed back into the OR. They had to take me back in and attempt to stop some of the bleeding. Next thing I remember was waking up in recovery asking Eric where the babies were. Eric told me they were ok and that my mom and sister were giving them their first feeding. I was so sad I missed that, I was angry with the nurse, I was not allowed to nurse the twins for 24 hours. Any milk I pumped had to be thrown out because of all the drugs they had to give me the second time I went into the OR. I was so sad hours had passed and I didn't remember certain things. Eric said they asked me questions about what milk I wanted the twins to have, I have no memory of any of it. I am just thankful the family was there to help.
As soon as I was back in the room all of those emotions went away, they were here. They were doing well and a great size for coming 4 weeks early! I was so thankful that everything was going to be ok! Our sweet twins, we love you so much!
